1990 230ce no difference between standard & economy

Any tips on why my 230ce changes gear @ same rate if I have standard
or economy seleced.
I checked throttle pressure cable for slack ,tightened it a bit and it kicks down better from 4th now.
But it is still very slow off the mark from stand still. :?

Eddie,
If you move the selector to 2nd then back to D when stationary, the car will take off in 1st without any need for kickdown, the length of time it holds 1st depends on your throttle opening as usual. Makes the car a bit brisker without having to go mad.

I had the same problem on my W124 24V saloon.Turned out the electronic switch was faulty and stuck in "E" mode...so It only starts in 2nd.
To be honest when I had it looked at at Cotswold in Cheltenham they said the only difference between S and E was the fact in sport mode it starts in 1st whereas E starts in 2nd...
