I have a 1980 300 diesel saloon - my problem is that it does not smoothly change up to the next gear - instead it sticks in gear abd revs increase. If you come of the accelerator for a few moments it will slip into gear ?? the car has been used very little for a number of years.

This sounds torque converter related or lack of oil, have you checked the condition of the fluid

Probably just needs the cable adjusting. But check the fluid level. Won't be anything to do with torque converter, I predict.

OK there are 3 things only for this problem

Kick down cable incorrectly adjusted

Low on fluid

Torque converter worn out

If its like my 2.5 auto there is a vacuum modulator on the fuel pump to help the box know what kind of load is on the drive train.

The cable should be adjusted such that there is no slack (just) with the throttle at rest.

The kick down is electric and has a switch in the floor at the acelerator pedal, make sure its not sticking.

Change the fluid and filter.

......there is a vacuum modulator on the fuel pump ......

Sounds unlikely!

It'll be the cable. Get the gearbox set up by a specialist with the right pressure/vacuum gauges and the specs. Takes half an hour.
