Hello everyone,

I must be getting into my midlife crisis. I have a low mileage '90 300TE-24 sportline.

Did anyone ever fitted an after-market exhaust to the 24 valve version? I am looking to get something in Stainless steel, that is emulating the sound of the old 280 twin cam or even the raspy sound of the pagoda 230SL?

What would your suggestions be? I have a loud old 911 with an RSR exhaust already, but I can't help to notice that there might be some improvement possible on the Mercedes.

In fact, dare I even say it, would it be possible to fit a side exhaust, similar to the exhausts of the g55 AMG?

Obviously an exit in the front wing wouldn't be possible a la

as the car needs to be useable on the roads without the need to wear earplugs.

Thanks in advance for some pointers,

Bert

The side exhaust idea is mad, as well as massively damaging to a classic car, there would be nowhere to put any silencers. Even coming out from the rear sill is daft IMO. The shell isn't designed for it so it will have to sit so low, you'll wreck it the first time you go over a speed bump.
Replacing the standard system with something made for you shouldn't be a problem thought. Lots of firms out there will make a system from stainless steel to your specifications. I believe this is the kind of thing 'superflow' do.

The side exhaust idea is mad

Thanks for your reply; regarding the madness: I am a chartered psychotherapist so I'm pretty sure it is contained ;):D

Back to the exhaust now: the goal I'm after is to get rid of all this politically correct muffling and environmentally friendly dampening that the w124 was subjected to. I'm well into my classic Porsches and, when commuting, I want a raspy, classic twin cam 6 in line sound as if it was a 1960ties Merc. Period.
(we are not talking boy racers here, obviously)

Maximum of 95dB, enhancing the cam effect of the 24 valve engine, to be at 73 or therabouts dB on motorway speeds; however, when in sports mode and going in the upper rev ranges I would like it to open up a bit.

Now, Remus, AMG, Brabus, Lorinser, a stainless version of the original one: how do I know they don't have resonance at motorway speeds? How do I know that the distinct "cam effect" of the 24 valve will be maintained or even enhanced? Is there a possibility to "tune" the exhaust that the car remains at maximum 95 dB, as that is a level I'm okay with and a bit comparable to the Mercedes of old that I like.

Also, I -possibly wrongly- understood that the side exhaust don't have any second bafflers, hence my question. I do take on board the lack of practicalities of such side exhaust and Jberks: thank you for pointing that out.

Are there any forum members with after market exhausts to feed back?

Once again, thanks for your time.

All the best,

Bert

Hi Jib,

Happy to oblige: this is/was my daily driver- currently at Fenn lane Motorsport in Upton, Nuneaton:

And finally being interviewed by Johhny Tipler of 911 and porsche world, 3rd and nearing 6000 rpm- you can sense his fear

I'm quite active on the UK the pre-1973 porsche site www.ddk-online.com and naturally supportive of the forum dedicated to the impact bumper porsches, www.impactbumpers.com

Jib, 83 sc, are we talking a 204bhp 911SC?

Many thanks to everyone for your replies. Ah, and why the Mercs I hear you ask? Well, you can't really transport a bonnet, or a spoiler or a set of wheels (although, last year at the fairmile )

in the 911. I typically do about 20 000 miles a year in the 911 but sometimes, just sometimes, one requires something bigger

All the best
