Hi, I have recently bought my dads 190 off him, its covered 160k, it has had a starting problem for the last 24 months and has had £1200 pounds spent on the problem and its still not cured.

its had new rotor/leads/dist/fuel injectors, my dad said that it was ok for a month and then went back to its old habits. Sometimes it fires up straight away and other times its a nightmare and you almost wait for the battery to give up, it does it when its hot or cold, it has a mind of its own. I gave the car to a garage and all they did was clean and check stuff, they cleaned the ritor arm and the pins on the OVP relay, I couldnt belive it when I picked it up and it fired 1st time without a fuss, then after a month it was the same again. I was told that it may need a new OVP which I changed at the weekend, the old one looked fine by the way. It was worse with the new one and I have had to fit the old one back on and its still a pain but better. Its so frustrating. I would really appreciate some advice on this, a freind said that it could be the ECU ? Could new plugs help ?, it does smell of fuel when I am trying to start it, sometimes it fires early on and then dies out as though there may be too much fuel being pumped through. I have to really pump the gas to get it to fire up (foot to the floor) but it smells of fuel even when you just turn the key with no throttle.

Cheers
Karl

Hi!Since you smell gas each time you might check for fuel leak.Check if you could fuel pressure before and after fuel pressure regulator. But it seems to me you have an ignition problem.Check ECU for fouled connections, bad ground but Benz ECU is PITA and so I think you have to try to find cheeper ECU.And don't forget to aplly silicone paste on the bottom of ECU prior to mount it on the car.Other therm used for Silicone paste is Heat Sink Grease and.
Good luck and sorry I can't be more in help!
