Hi All, Having had the non starting problem on my 300ce for a while I am going to bite the bullet and buy a replacement CPS and hope that this cures the problem.

Pls can someone -tell me the location of the sensor on a 300 12v (preferably with a diag) - ideally including the part number! and where is the best place to buy one without dropping my pants. Regards Fraz

thanks very much malcolm - i did a search for the bosch service centres - put in my postcode within 100 mile radius search on their site but no listings/address details were displayed. Do you have a link to a list of centres or a central phone number pls?

N.B is this also the best place to source a rotor arm and distributor cap as this is next on my hit list if the CPS doesn't solve my starting prob.

Ok many thanks for the help Malcolm. I have had a convo with Mercedes Tech who advises me that my problem is unlikely to be a faulty crank sensor as i would not be getting either fuel or a spark if the sensor was duff? would you agree with these comments? He suggestes either a metering head problem - i've no idea what this is and sounds expensive! or possible Leak in an air intake pipe?

P.S my probelm with the 300 is as follows below: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My 300ce has been a pig to start recently - the basic symptoms are when trying to start it will crank away but not fire - until i release my foot from the accelerator when it will then attempt to fire and chugg for a a short time then die. A big puff of smoke will often then be released via the front grille - coming out of the air intake/box. With many repeated attempts it will enventually start - when running it drives without fault. But when stopped it will again be a nightmare to get it running again.

A fueling issue by the sounds of it.

I would not say its the CPS either.

Get a fuel pressure tester on it and see what pressure you get when starting.

have asked a local mechanic who has previously looked at the Car if he can test the fuel pressure. He states that he thinksit's unlikely to be a fueling issue as it was fairly flooded when he removed the plugs to check them last time he had a look at the car for me. Does this make sense - anything else i might check. Regards Fraz

It is pointless guesing without testing.

If you have spark and fuel it should run if the timing is set ok.

thanks for reply black - the prob i have is that i can't get it going inorder to get to the garage and get it diagnosed?! My mobile mehanic has checked the distributor cap and concludes it looks fine - could the distributor cap look fine but actually be knackered? My local merc parts people suggest it is most likely to be the distributor cap causing all the probs. Cheers Fraz
