Can anyone help me with a problem I'm having on my 1993 200e W124 saloon.
The struggles to run at idle with what can only be described as a slight misfire, I've replaced all spark plugs, HT leads and one of the coil packs, but still the engine struggles at tick over. A mechanic friend seems to think that the throttle body is a bit iffy and that could be causing the slight misfire. The engine blew its head gasket earlier this year which has been replaced, and the block has been put back together properly. Since the gasket went, the car has been running poorly, cutting out at junctions and rattling at high revs. Please could someone shed some light on this if possible. The engine is the 1998cc DOHC 16v unit.

The OVP relay can cause this, check 12v in on pin 30 and 12v on pins 97 tis the one under the bonnet in the control box with the fuse on top.

If it is a 16 valve jobbie two things come to mind. Firstly check that the wire going to the plug on the front of the inlet cam has not come adrift and secondly check that the valve timing has been done correctly. I base this on high revs and the cam not advancing.

I will check this out. Thanks for the tip. Do you know of anyone who has a spare throttle body for this engine thats going for a reasonable rate? It looks very much like the ones fitted to most other 4 cylinder C-class Mercs.

I agree with Malcolm. Check the simple things first. Have you had harder starts and erratic ABS light?

Hi Ian. Mine has the 111-16valve engine, but doesn't have variable valve timing.

It should have as far as I am aware. My 111 engine has and so do the customers cars that I see.

The car starts ok, no erratic ABS light as yet, hope that doesn't happen.

The problem is probably more down the line you already suspect then and not the OVP.
