On the first cold start of the day, the car starts perfectly. If the car is warm and restarted within 30 mins or so, it also starts perfectly. The problem comes if the car is left for some time after being driven, but not long enough to warrant a full cold start.

The starter motor works fine but the car just doesn't fire. Eventually it does fire (after 10 turns+ of the starter motor) but then tries to rev too low (150-200rpm) with the battery light on (clearly not getting to the correct alternator voltage due to the low revs). It needs a blip of throttle to make it idle well and then drives fine. The throttle body has been thoroughly cleaned out.

Someone mentioned that this could be a camshaft sensor that would give funny readings when warm, but the cold start programme would prevent it being an issue when cold. When very hot, it would likewise easily start. The ignition system has also been thoroughly checked over with all plugs replaced. Any advice welcomed before lots of money is spent! Could this be an OVP relay? Apparently you can only buy the whole relay set for £192+fitting for the S320...

maybe the temp sensor is out of calibration? if tyhe system thinks that teh engine is hot, but it is in fact only warm, it wont 'pull the chocke on' so to speak..

temp sensors are cheap, and easily tested - part numbers 01 542 51 17 (31 dollars US approx) or 00 542 62 18 (11 US dolars) located on the water pump...

should be of use...

i have more - just ask ;)

Thanks! That's an idea I hadn't thought of ... I'll look into it. Out of interest, does anyone know what other sensors can directly effect the starting of the car?

I believe it is the coolant temperature sensors (to determine whether or not to do a cold start) and the cam sensor (to coordinate the fuel injection sequence during start up). This problem sounds to me like the ECU thinking it doesn't need to give it as much throttle as it needs - probably because of a false sensor reading .... which isn't showing up on the diagnostic equipment as it probably is providing a reading.
