19998 c200 2.2 diesel ECP on and cutting out

hi all this is my first post
i
t's a great site you've got here and i was just wondering if i could pick a few brains...
i'm a mechanic myself (peugeot trained) and a friend has called me about his car (as above). he said the light came on and it's given up running!
just wanted to know if this is a common problem and what the fix is.

oh and it's a manual...

Im wondering if this is the CDI engine, if it is, the warning light may be the EPC, which would indicate low fuel pressure at the fuel rail/injectors, can happen when a car runs low on fuel or air in the system .. check it out and report back help is available..

hiya mate,
this is definitely not a CDi engine. it's the old mechanical type injection, which makes me even more confused! the ECP is definitely on though. was just wondering where there could be an electrical fault on engine management...
