Hi All

I have noticed that my '93 200TE is sounding increasingly like a diesel at idel, particularly when in gear ( its an auto). My limited intelligence :? suggests that this could be either tappets not adjusting correctly, assuming they are the self adjusting type or Cam chain tensioner.

If Increase the revs or drive off, the noise goes away. My questions is has anyone any ideas what a faulty tensioner would sound like and would it only be apparent at idle?

Many Thanks

Thanks Andy.

I sort of guessed that it wouldn't be the easy answer :(

Is this something that should be tackled straight away or can I live with it without doing any permanent damage?

Cheers

Piestore,

Not sure of the engine model, it is a 2 litre 16 valve if that is any help. As for the damper, I don't know, how would I tell?

Thanks

Hi

If its a 16v then its a 111engine. I would agree then with Piestore. Check the damper on the front of the engine for the Poly V Belt (fan belt). When you get the noise just press the little shocker absorber and see if the noise diminishes or goes away. You should be able to feel the noise.

It could still be tappets, but we have less tappet problems with the 111 engine.

Good luck

engine noise

some of these engines did not have a damper fitted although all the fittings ar there to do so, its very easy to retro fit and not expensive.

Good luck

Andy, Piestore

Thanks for your help, I didn't have a chance to look until last weekend. Wish I had read Piestore's last post first or I might not have spent hours looking for the damper! :? I think my car is one without it!

One interesting point is the sound appears to come form the injectors/intake area. Could it be an injector? :?:

I'll still pursue the damper. Would you suggest retro fitting is worth it (what are the benefits, apart form less noise!?)

Cheers

Jonathan
