I see that the starter on a 203 is driven from the front SAM,,these are always failing, the fault could well be here

To take the starter off if it an exhaust off job

its a clk Malcolm. going on my newly printed chart (lol! taking things serious now!) 2001 will be the last of the 208's or maybe a 209. 2001 seems to be the crossover pont!

Malcolm was saying that on a 203 (c class) the starter is controlled by the rear sam unit (a kind of collection and distribution module for the electrics in more simple terms) and these are prone to failure which could give similar symptoms. i was pointing out that yours is a clk not a c class, but it may still apply, im not sure. depends whether its a 208 or a 209 chassis id guess! these are the second 3 digits of the vin (first 3 numbers after the initial 3 letters)

i think the heat and all that garden centre excitement in the SL has been too much for you Malcolm! maybe you shouldve treat yourself to an ice cream during the day to cool your brain down to a more optimal operating temperature! Besides, we all have them! i had 1 the other day!

The starter is driven from the K40/4k2 starter relay

On a 203 the starter is controlled by the front SAM, not the rear as has been said. on a CLK 208, the starter output is from the k40 relay, best bet is to shoot 12 volt down the purple wire from the k40, been following this thread, the car has a dead battery!

Just thought of the other common fault with them, Where the main power feed for the starter comes via the n/s floor, they rust, try cleaning that post up. thinking about it, thats prob it!!

What makes it hard is that we have no feedback as to what voltage is present anywhere

tell me about it! when i first started serving my time in a retail ford dealer's my main work was mk 1/2 fiesta's mk 3/4 escorts and mk1/2 sierras. cupled with an odd capri, cortina, mk2/3 granada and you could solve more or less everything with a multimeter, A big hammer, a screwdriver, sidecutters and insulation tape!!!

You need a very long extension with a good universal joint
