Hi all.

I am new to this forum and hope to derive a lot of useful info from here. My wife has just purchased an SLK and is generally delighted with it.
However when it is first started in the morning, the engine seems very noisey and makes a kind of 'chuffing' sound in unison with the revs when ticking over. At first we thought it was a blowing exhaust, however the exhaust is sound. One thing I noticed is, when you put the transmission in neutral, it seems to stop the noise but as soon as you put it in drive it starts up again.
Is this just something caused by the loading on the transmission when in the drive position? The noise goes away once the engine has warmed up a bit. Also (this may be related) the engine sounds a little 'tappety' when you are driving. Very obvious when you go through a tunnel and such like. However when you rev the engine in neutral the noise is not present.
Is there a possible problem with the transmission or does it perhaps just need a fluid change or suchlike? The gears select and the semi auto function works a treat, but if there is anything that may be wise to check, I would like to know what I can ask of the mechanic.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Dan.

I think the noise you are hearing could be the alternator belts it will be under load after initial start.......

you will hear noises going threw a tunnel or driving beside a wall on any car.

Dont think there is anything to worry about,so just drive and enjoy...

Hi Nicky.

Funny you should say that. I have been listening closer, and have found that to be the area it seems to be coming from. Also I found out that it recently had a new alternator fitted too. Maybe the belt tension needs looking at, do you think?

Later,
Dan.

2002 Slk 200 K

Chuffing noise at start up when cold .Snap My 02 200 slk does exactly the same and has for the last two years since i bought it.I mention it at the garage at every opportunity and the reply is always the same ie "all those kompressor engines sound like that".It hasn't got better or worse in those two years and it seems its a byproduct of the sporty exhaust note built in to the car.If you are still unsure look out for a passing SLK when you are on foot(yes some of us do still walk) and listen to it.If its relatively low speed it sounds awful.

Noisy start up

My C200K is exactly the same, when I first bought it I took it back to the dealer expecting a cracked manifold to be found. I was told it's something to do with cold starting where an air valve is open to inject air into the exhaust system using the supercharger to supply the pressurized air for the first few minutes of running. I must admit it was a concern at the time and had an independent exhaust company check the system out too, they found no faults. And yes after a few minutes the noise goes away, so maybe all the Kompressors sound the same with the M111 engine. I'm used to it now and can't fault the performance of the car.
