Hi,

I have just bought a 2002 E270 CDI - Avantgarde with 60k on the clock one owner. This will be my first Mercedes I have had Audi, BMW and Lexus so used to the luxury car.

I read the reviews before I bought it today which seemed to be very positive but today after I bought it I found a review with a list of things to watch out for and I must say it is a very big list with some scary things to look out for including the electronic breaking system not working and recalls!

Does any one have one of these cars?

Also how can I tell what extras I have on the car, I know it has parking sensors and sat nav but what about the not so obvious ones like the air suspension?

Thanks for reading.

Chris.

jberks has an 04 E270CDI and will probably be able to give some advice on his experience.
Engine mounts failing are one thing I remember.

You can always ring your local dealer give them the chassis number and ask if its eligable for any recalls.

hi,
3 years in and I'm still very happy with mine - basically its a very good car. I'm certainly not looking to change just yet.

In terms of faults
Yours won't be galvanised so as mentioned - check the wheel arches. If there is anything there, MB should sort it for you FOC.

I've had a few bits done but nothing serious - these are the things I can think of....

Dash bulb went and it needed a new cluster to fix but if i'd been paying it would have been repaired. Not common but if there is a bulb out don't ignore it thinking it's a simple cheap fix.

I've just had the cruise control stalk replaced as it kept triggering a fault. Not a common issue though.
I also just had a half shaft seal replaced but that was mainly because MB agreed to pay 70%. I'd probably have ignored it if I'd had to pay it all as its very minor.

Engine mounts replaced - check for vibration.

Yours may have the Valeo radiator. If so, get it replaced immediately (they can kill gearboxes).

Ensure the gearbox works well and if it hasn't been done, get the g/box fluid and filters changed. NOt listed as a service item in 2002 but done at 40k now.

Have the electrical seal replaced on the g/box - again if it hasn't been done - they leak and flood the ECU.

Compared to the new generation, the 270 is a bit agricultural. (Don't drive the v6 cdi's it will just upset you!) I find it a bit noisy on acceleration but once up to speed she's silent. Cruising and pick up at 70+ is effortless. MPG wise - round town 25-30 and on a run 35-45. Best was 48 driving like a granny. To put that in perspective, I had a loan C200cdi. It returned 39. My E270 regularly shows 42 on the same trip.

As I said, its still a very good car.

Thanks for the replies.

I picked the car up yesterday and must say I am very pleased with it love the toys and the night time dash wow! I know very shallow.

The radiator I heard about I will take your advice on all the items. The air con does not seem to work (no cold air) I hope it just needs re-gassing which I will get done at the weekend.

I have a noise like a servo coming I think from the brake pedal or maybe engine I can feel it vibrate, it happens when I slow down but not always?

Must say I have a big grin on my face when I am driving the car even though it is 6 years old I must say it is in a class of its own.

MPG so far has been 39 which made me laugh the Volvo was 54 - 63 but hell I love the car and 39 is not too bad. I need to get used to an auto so I can pull into the fast lane quickly on a dual carriage way.

Cheers

Chris.

If you really want to go hold the gear lever to the left and it will select the best gear for acceleration, it won't over rev as it will change up once it gets to the limiter. Just remember to hold it back to the right to put it back into D once you've finished accelerating.

I know very shallow but nice isn't it!

Thats the SBC braking system pumping back up. You'll also hear it trigger sometimes when you unlock the car.

6 years isn't old. In fact it in merc terms it's still a nipper! This is the argument I have with people who look at new cars and declare mercs are overpriced. On the face of it, there isn't £10,000 difference between, say a Passat and an E. But, wait until there's a few miles and a few years on them. It struck me the other day going down a rather tatty road. Mine is 4 years old and has 57k on it now but whereas with most cars you'll get the odd bit of trim rattling and clattering around by this point, the cabin was still silent. No creaks, no rattles - it drives and sounds just like it did when new. Thats what we're really paying for. Hence you are doing it exactly right. Buying used you're getting all that benefit and someone else has paid for it.

The biggest problem I find with the 270 is turbo lag (it affected all powerful diesels of that era - inc the 320cdi) but by pre-empting it, you soon learn to hit the pedal a moment earlier than you need it. I tend to find that it's better to use the torque and keep it in a higher gear for fast lane acceleration rather than using kick down and often finding myself in too low a gear, the revs high and sitting outside the power band, going nowhere.

Live in Wellie and yes I have used Albert Lock but for the more 'complicated' stuff but he is always very busy and you therefore have to wait. I will now be using Parkham in Wellie as it is nearer and they are really very helpful and on the couple of occasions I have used them found them to be most obliging and half the MB rate per hour:p.

Thanks for clearing things up!

Okay your are all going to laugh at this one! I have been driving the car in W winter mode on my auto gear box. Changed it this morning and it went like a rocket very pleased.I should really read the manual!

I have messed around with pushing the stick to left great fun, thanks.

One of my many cars was a Passat it drove nicely but the build quality was dreadful go down a bumpy road and something would drop off or make a noise.

I went to a dealer today and checked the recall's and the brakes had been done thank god. I did notice how pricey E class cars are new 40K wow!

Is the place in Wellingborough a Mercedes specialist or just a good general garage?

Cheers

Chris.
