Hi everyone,

I've just bought a 2003 C220 CDI Coupe, picking it up on friday! Are there any common issues with these cars - obviously the mercedes dealer I bought it from is singing it's praises, but it's replacing a car that was fine apart from a single problem that kept re-occurring and causing the car to break down, so I'm wondering if there's anything in particular that I should look out for!

Thanks!

Not really. Lots about and not too many problems. The only thing to be aware of (though not worry about) is that in 2003 MB were still recovering from the 'accountancy years' so it may be prudent to ensure you have a good warranty in case the electronics prove fragile. The 220 engine is well proven and pretty bullet proof so no worries there. We've had a recent experience having to replace a number of components on a 2003 E220cdi and it can get expensive with each module costing a few hundred pounds.
Mercs rarely beak down, but some systems can go on the blink from time to time, like any computer based gizmo. They aren't Japanese reliable but on the other side, they are so much nicer to drive and own!!
Have a look at "MB Service plus" as this effectively makes MB maintain your car for you and is one of the best service/maintenance deals schemes around.

Hi,
I've had my 220 CDI (saloon) from 04 (it's a 03 plate, registered aug 03), I've had no major issues with the car. I've only done 51K miles on it though. Have changed 2 rear brake lights (79p each).

C220 Coupe'

I have had my C220 cdi Coupe from new,(April 02 now 45k miles) the only faults I have had was an Injector pump which was expensive but in the end with 50% discount and 50% servicing to cover costs that were incurred whilst the fault was diagnosed, and the normal roll bar rubber (rattle at front over bumps), due to all the "speed calming square lumps with tapered edges" taking their toll.
Front tyres wearing on edges (increase tyre pressures 3-4 psi stops it) rear tyres especially Michies only lasting 12.5k now on P Zero assymetros 14.5k at present and still 3.5mm.
I also started towing a caravan last year with it and regularaly get 31mpg towing and top 40's mid 50's mpg solo (depending on if its me or the wife driving)

It's a 52 - not sure of the exact month but as its 2003 I would imagine it's early (jan-apr?). It's got 12 months warranty from the mercedes dealer, and I'm contemplating investing in one of the service programs to cover maintenance costs - I hear that mercedes are pretty pricey to service! Although the car has pretty low mileage (19k) I will be doing a fair amount of travelling - hence the reason for trading in an unreliable petrol car for a mercedes diesel!
