The owners manual for this car, (6cyl inline) says that should the engine oil be accidently overfilled one should go to MB, where a technician will syphon off the excess oil
My question to others out there with experience is, where on the engine can the syphon tube be inserted for oil to be drawn out, would that be a redundent dipstick tube connection
Or is the manual incorrect

That's correct. Even for normal servicing, many? garages suck the oil out through the dipstick tube using vacuum extraction - saves removing all the undertrays, and possible sump plug leakage. It's also cleaner than having the old oil splashing about.

Thanks for the illustration Malcolm, not all that important but when did MB stop dipsticks on this car. Only had this car a few weeks and probably read that owners handbook too much, after all you dont get dirty nails checking the level electronically.
As for acquiring a workshop manual for this car would discs off eBay be ok or can you recommend better.

My inline 3.2CDi circa 2000 reg comes with an engine dipstick but not one for the auto trans, so its news to me that they did away with that one as well.

However more to the point my garage overfilled the engine by about 1/2 a litre and I left it until the next service. The only problem with doing this is that the engine level sensor kept reminding me on long journeys that the oil level was high. I think it depends on how much the engine has been overfilled, the sensor is very sensitive probably to about 1/4 litre.

Hope this helps!

It's nothing short of remarkable that your car apparently used *no* oil at all beween services!

I gather the latest V6 diesels have the engine oil dipstick fitted again. I can understand the ATF one not being fitted - I imagine many were overfilled by people that didn't follow the checking proceedure.

My car never uses any oil, and my last 129 V6 did not use a drop between services

For Malcolm210's 2000 reg car that's pretty good though. My C270CDi has always used about a tenth of a litre per 1000 miles - pretty well all long motorway journey use. I keep it topped up using the "hidden" sump contents display (in litres) on the C Class.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
My E300TD never used any oil whatsoever until recently, when the low oil warning sounded and I discovered that it had lost half a litre or so over the last 5000 miles (I'm presuming 5000, although for all I know it could be 500, just gotta keep an eye on it now).

Which is annoying, and worrying.
