200clk Clutch And Flywheel Problems On New Car

Hi can anyone give me any help?

I have a CLK that is a year old with manual gearbox. I have done 8000 miles and the clutch has gone. After some investigation, the garage have said that its my fault. Not engaging the clutch properly. Im sure that this is not the case. I have had loads of cars before and this has never been a problem. Also, they have today rang to say fly wheel needs replacing. I have been told that none of this is covered by my warranty. Not sure what to do or what to say to them. Can anyone help me please.

Hello Wendy, in the first place the only reason for failure ,short of something breaking is to ride the clutch, that is to hold the car in gear on a hill or traffic lights by slipping the clutch, resting ones foot on the clutch pedal does not help.
Maybe a very steep drivway could cause early failure.

The fault, it would be nice to know more about how the problems started. What happened ?.

The clutch ass; bolts onto the flywheel, I have never heard of a flywheel going wrong other than needing a new starter ring, but that's almost unheard of on our cars. Biggest snag is that the garage has your car in pieces. at this point I do think that you are being had,so to speak. Let us know what happened and how the problems started. Meanwhile other people will come up with their view of the situation.

As Malcomn rightly says, the most common cause for these failures is to ride the clutch or simply to rest your foot on the pedal. My Grandmother goes through clutches at an alarming rate for this reason. I suppose some cars are more tolerant of this than others, so you'd have to be absolutely certain that there is no way that either you or another driver has this habbit before taking this further. I burned out the clutch on my mums BMW many years ago (as a teenager) when I discovered that if I kept the revs at around 3800 and eased the clutch out so the revs remained constant, the acceleration was really quick and smooth. Great fun but ultimately expensive. Any teenagers been driving yours?

On the flywheel, I guess if the clutch has been slipping for an extended period, the flywheel could have been marked or warped though excessive heat and this is why they are recommending a new one.
