Depends on what your criteria is. MPG, luxury etc. The one to go for is always top of the range. But it depends on your pocket.

In own personal experience, the larger six  cylinder engines are not that much more thirsty than the fours.  I think the W124's are quite heavy and a two litre engine has to be worked quite hard.  Spares and servicing however will be somewhat more expensive for the bigger engines.  You should try as many as you can before deciding, see what engine type "suits".
I've heard the diesels are really good but I've never driven one - however these will most certainly be more expensive.
