200TE auto gear box - Gear thresh holds

can anyone tell me the revs when the gear box should shift into the next gear pleease?
I have D reg 200te which seems to get to 30-35mph then has no more gears. so at 60mph the rev counter says 3200rpm. the car 'feels' like it wants to go to another gear but can't. The mechanic says its ok but I'm not sure. Can anyone help please  Thanks Tina

      i think this is ok- my 260e does about 21/22 mph per 1000rpm in top gear(4 speed auto).  Using this as a comparison, 65 mph at 3200 rpm sounds about right. You could always count how many gear changes it makes from a standing start in first gear just to make sure theres none left!

I feel the same about my 190e, it goes into 4th at about 30 MPH, which is a bit shite really!. I tend to hold it in 3rd or use the kickdown to give it a bit more power. Tina, dont forget if you do count the gearchanges from a standing start, auto mercs of our age pull away in second gear all the time, unless you press your foot to the floor in Standard mode, which kicks it down into 1st.

Following on from this, thinking about it, cars that were originally made to be driven down German Autobhan's almost flat out most of the time you would think would rev pretty low in top gear, maybe Andy can shed some light?

Hi All,

If you look at your speedos you will find a small yellow mark above the numbers (or there abouts). This mark shows when the gear box should change at when driven at speed.

By the sound of it Tina. There is nothing wrong with your gear box. MB are well renown for not quite getting there gear box ratios quite right. Those of you driving pre 84 mercs will have the early box which really does have high gearing. It took MB quite a time to develop the 5sp. Then it was a extra.

Dear all
          Thanks to you all for your help on my cog box, I'm happy now that it is ok. next problem to tax the little grey cell. Why has the central locking thrown its rattle out of the pram. It will only lock the drivers door. Could it have rain in it???. Will it sort its self out or is it another expencive garage job?

Dave's right, its all to do with Vacuum pumps and hoses..there are a few other posts on here about the very same thing.

Bring back electric solenoids...much easier!!
