Could you please help me. My 220 CDI was running at a low temp 60 - 70 deg, so I changed the thermostat. I thought this fixed the problem, the temp came up to 80 deg, heater works fine and no strange noises. However I am now paranoid about engine temperature and notice it rise to 90 as soon as the the engine is put under the slightest load, is this normal?

My memory was the car would run at 80 except in arduous conditions of high external temp and load.

Please relieve me of my paranoia of temperature and dreaded air locks.

If it is air locked, how do you remove it?

220cdi high temp

hi
ref airlock, as far as i am aware these engines don't have a problem with airlocks, but if you run your engine on tickover and put your heater on the hot setting and remove the header cap this should expel any air in the system.

Also squeezing the fat bottom hose with the cap off will remove any air

Thanks for the rapid responses, do I take it you think 90 deg is a little high for an engine under minor load?

Engines are at their best at over 100c, do you have a faulty sender for the temp,,that could give a rapid change on the gauge

The temperature sender is a new one which came with the thermostst housing, genuine MB.

It would be interesting (to some) to see the variations in temperatures these engines run run at after say 15 miles.

220 CDI owners please post you readings.

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
I have a C270CDi and can't remember it ever (once warmed up, obviously) being anything other than approx 85C.

Hi all, further to this thread i run a c270cdi and in the recent cold weather the heater doesn't get warm and the dash screen shows its running at about 50 degrees even though the gauge goes up to about 120. A quick call to a MB garage in leeds for a price of a new thermostat I was told that it is very un-likely that its the thermostat, had it been an Audi or any other car this would be true but not for a MB! I'm a little confused. Any ides anyone?

Hi,
I posted an earlier heater problem with my C270 CDI 52 plate. My heater is only lukewarm. Engine takes 4-5 miles to get warmed up, then it sits at between 60-70, even on motorway. I've resorted to blanking off part of the radiator after some advice on the forum. It's marginally better, now 70 constant but even in traffic it never gets above 80.

Regards
Steve

hi
fitted new thermostat on my 2000 e220 cdi today,it used to sit on 60 degrees, now it is 80 to 90,the heater is now really good and you can barely hold your hand on the vent when on the hottest setting.car runs a lot better as well.it took about an hour and was,nt too bad a job.i found it easier when i removed the oil filter, its gives you lots more room to work, just make sure you put somes rags in the filter housing so you dont drop the bolts in there.

Sits at just over 80 around town or quicker road...takes about 5-10 mins to get there at low speed though.
