Help:
my techie tells me the inlet manifold on my 2000 car has valves that are broken. The effect is a loss of power from start up....but stop the car, and it sometimes reverts to full power. He tells me whilst the broken parts are listed as individual items, the manifold is only available to buy as a complete part.

Would need more information on your car, model etc.

Sounds like "inlet port shutoff motor" has a problem. The motors pack up, they operate flaps inside the manifold. The flaps gum-up/stick causing the motor to overheat & break the linkage.

Model E 220cdi, yr 2000, 120000 miles.
Will it do any harm to engine etc if I simply put up with it? If the engine is down on power, it often comes back after engine restrat....completely at random. You never know how long the journey will take!
Also, have you any idea where repair kits for the thing can be sourced as I am told they appear as MB parts, but are not available to buy except as a complete manifold?

yes it could do damage as the flaps can and will brake up and then get sucked into the inlet chamber and jam up with the inlet valves. money money money. get it fixed asap.
