I have attempted the impossible (so I have been told) and have replaced a head gasket on my 1965 220se, engine no. 127 982 22 013 972 (injected model).

I think I have done everything right, but am unsure I have set the valve timing correct. Havn't started the engine yet and have removed all rockers for fitment and adjustment.

Is there a way to tell if the valve timing is correct without learning the hard way? Are there markings? What is the 60 degree after TDC mark for? Does this mark have anything to do with it?

the only way i know of is to use a timing light....u shine the light on the 60 deg TDC mark while the engine is running while advancing or retarding...when you see the two marks line up bingo the timings good as

Umm Kiwi - that will only show ignition timing!

The valve timing needs to be spot on before an attempt to check the ignition timing is made.

Can't help on the specifics - try calling the stealership and talk to the foreman? (They may have data for ths age of car!).

I have done this in the past and often found that information is forthcoming.

Hi

You should of put the engine to TDC and timined to No1 before you removed the cylinder head.

If you put the crank to TDC. Then cam to the mark at the front of the first cam post. There is usually a little nick out of the washer fitted to the cam. This lines up with the mark on the campost. This is the timing marks. So long as the crank is at tdc.

Hope this makes sense
