230E AutoGearbox

Hi All

When reversing, there's a "wrrring" sound from the autobox. This has gotten worse so took it to the garage; mechanic said the gears need to be replaced and gave a long list of part items to include Automatic Gasket, Flywheel Gear, Long Shaft Coupling and three sets of Gear Linings.

The gears are okay in forward and hence wondered if I should proceed as advised by garage.

Please advise.

It all depends on the value of the car and the cost of the repairs. In the past I have made the mistake of ploughing money into a car that kept having problems. If it is just a noise when reversing, I would be temped by the cheaper option of ignoring the problem. It is unlikely for the reverse gear to stop working entirely, but even if you totally break it, I suspect it may be cheaper to replace the whole thing with a second hand unit than to repair and recondition the old one...

Im assuming your car isnt newish.... If so, then i would agree - Let it be!

When it breaks, itll be cheaper just to find another gearbox......

Hi

The bit that does the reverse part of the box is at the front of the gearbox & does not have any influence on the forward gears.Thats why you get a lot of people when there box expires say."reverse is ok". Any way. If its just reverse that the problem. You will need to remove the gearbox and strip the front end. The discription of the parts you have named. Do not seem correct to me but he's your mechanic. Normally if the box is out we would normally strip the rest & have look & replace as required.
