I recently replaced head gasket on my 1985 230E Auto.
The head had to be skimmed, but only 10 thou. At the same time , I did a decoke (not a lot of carbon) and reground the valves(though not a lot needed). I replaced one of the rocker arms , and a valve lifter on another arm. I tested all valve lifters and all seemed OK. Engine now running OK, but 'tappet' noise has just become apparent, which makes me thing that there's some adjustment to clearance required. Is this possible to do without going to the Merc dealer?

Hi Tony,

Assuming that the vehicle is a 124 and not a 123 model. Then theres nothing you can do except replace tappet elements. Or put up with it and hope it goes away.

Now you what it feels like. Nothing wrong before you touched it. Now it tapps like a gooden! I wish some of my customers could wittness this.

Regards
