What do people think of the performance of their 230TE's?

I'm finally in the position where I can justify buying a TE, and the 230 seems to make the most sense in terms of fuel and insurance costs.

However 'Honest John' - although generally encouraging about TE's - expresses some concern about performance, particularly if aircon is fitted.

I'm not looking for blistering performance; just don't want to drive something that is obviously underpowered.

Cheers

we've got a 230TE and have no issues with it being underpowered - admittedly it's not got aircon but it's usually carrying a load.

Overtaking is effortless with reasonable acceleration at virtually any speed and a cruising speed well in excess of any speed limits in this country.

For me the 230 makes a lot of sense, powerful enough yet economical - ours turns in an average of 30 mpg.

230TE Performance

Hi!

I own a 1988 23OTE on which everything gradually breaks and is repaired apart from the engine! I have said elsewhere on the forum I used to own Daihatsu Charade GTti's which hit 60mph in less than 8 secs, which is fast. Having not had one for 3 years due to financial and family issues I have found that my Mercedes is meeting my performance needs and also carting the kids around.

Obviously a 300TE would be a lot faster but also costs more to buy, run, insure, repair etc., which is fine if you can afford it. Motorway driving is good, you get a shove in the back when you put the foot down. Overtaking is excellent on normal roads when you need to as the kickdown just makes it fly past. It is not quite the same as my GTti but it certainly doesn't disappoint and anyway I am older and more sensible now! Thats what kids do to you!

Hope this helps!

Hi Alan

Do not let the comment put you off.

I expect Jeremy Clarkson would say it is underpowered too - but then look at what else he gets to drive.

The 230TE is a competent motor capable of high speed comfortable cruising, the four cylinder engine is nowhere near as smooth as a six - but hey thats physics for you.

Test drive and see if it suits you - thats what matters at the end of the day.

Hi Alan

I have to agree with the other chaps on here!
My 230te is lovely to drive, i think its pretty smooth too.
The performance is good too, i had a BMW 318is before and this feels quicker.
The motorway run returns around 32mpg and in town about 20ish.
Anyway goodluck with your purchase and remember to check everything works before you buy.

cheers
