I have recently had my gearbox done and I have a couple of issues.

When I put it into Drive, there is a couple of secs delay then the thing engages with a big thump. It's a really harsh change and can cause the car to jump forward if you don't have your foot hard onthe brake. The change was harsh before the rebuild and when the box was on the way out, I checked the vacumm pipes and found a big split in the black/red one that goes from the vacuum switch, near the battery, to the offside of the box.

The thump is a lot worse since the pipe was replaced so I think this vacuum has something to do with it. (though the box has been rebuilt in the mean time)

The vacuum switch thing, near the battery, seems to be open when the S/E switch on the gearbox is in one position and closed when it's in the other.

There is another vacuum pipe from the manifold to the nearside of the box.

The vacuum switch thing, near the battery, has a one pipe coming from the vacuum thing near the brake pedal and the black/red pipe that goes to the offside of the box.

The first question is, is the S/E switch just a straight on/off for the vacuum switch near the battery?

I think so. The thump is worse if I switch R to D quickly.

The more pressing problem is the 3-4 shift, I've got to get to about 45mph and then lift right off before it will switch to 4th. Then once I'm in forth, it won't kickdown which makes overtaking a bit of a lottery.

I'm not sure what half the switches and things are supposed to do, otherwise I might have a chance of working out what is going on.

What does the idling switch do and how does it work? (It may be the sorce of the problem)

After a day poking around I seem to have got it working a lot better now. Here is some of the things I found (for the record)

I took the connector off the idling switch and the contacts were corroded, so I cleaned these up. The switch was not always clicking over so I bent the arm a little so that it would. The thump has been reduced, but still happens if I switch between D and R quickly. I still don't understand what this switch does though.

I checked out the vacuum pipes. There is one that goes from the manifold to the lefthand side of the box. I pulled it off the manifold end to find the other end had come away as well, I guess it hadn't been put on properly. My guess is that it was leaking at the point where it attaches to the box and I had to rev like mad to get a enough of a vacuum in the manifold to get it to change gear. In fact the greatest vacuum will occur when you are reving hard and you suddenly shut down the throttle.

The kickdown is also working now, I don't if this is due to the vacuum pipe or the fact that I resaeted the connector on the box.

It still needs a bit of fine tuning, but it's working a lot better.

I'll have take the prop shaft off again as the 'expert' has misaligned this, he said I needed a new rear rubber mount thing because it felt a bit rough.
