240TD - Rasping noise after starting engine

When I start my 240TD engine, it fires straight away but after a couple of seconds there is a rasping noise that last's for a further two seconds. This only happens when the engine is cold. I've checked oil levels etc. and nothing seems to be amiss, but I have a feeling there's a potential drama about to happen.
