250D Exhaust - Rattling Exhaust

I have in the last few weeks been frustrated by a rattle from the exhaust on my 250D (1991). I have managed to trace it to the front pipe of the exhaust, it would seem that this section is double skinned, and that for some annoying reason the inner section is rattling against the outer.
My questions are, is this a common fault, and can anything be done, (other than buying a new section!)??

I had a similar problem with my C class, only it was the outer section rubbing against the inner pipe. As far as I know the outer section is just to protect against stones etc. so I just cut the outer pipes off (there's two). The inner pipe is still fine 18 months later.
The outer section is quite tough, in the end I got a guy in a Kwik fit to burn them off. It took about 5 minutes and I gave 10 quid -  a lot cheaper than a new exhaust.
