250td sport 1998

Hi All

I have a huge smile on my face as I am looking at buying my first mercedez.

However, it is a 1998 250td sport automatic. From all reports it should have years left in it.

However the is only full mbsh on it up until 60,000 and that was in 2001 since then only scrappy bits of paper work for bulbs being replaced etc.

The car has 138,000 on the clock and I have no reason to disbelieve it as why would you roll the clock back to that amount and not sub 100,000.

So Question is, no paper work for ECU work or glow plug work or cat work. Car starts great with no dashboard lights left on, AC works well, acceleration in 'd' automatic mode picks up ok after a split seconds hesitation.

How can I check the car out or do I just have to bite the bullet and go for it. Mercedez being as they are is there any point in asking the AA\RAC to have a look first or would it be beyond them (do disrespect, but I have heard mercedez like their own mechanics).

Engine has been steemed cleaned and all looks very tidy, pipe are clean, belts seem new. The only sign of misgivings (being a petrol person until now) was a little bit of fresh oil\black liquid just by the front end of the engine block where I would expect the spark plugs would be on a petrol engine, instead there are small half inch square plastic covers by this small leak. Can this be an engine block leak, could it be a head gaskit, sorry for the stupid questions I have not been able to research the entire engine make up of the W202.

Anyway, any help that you can offer would be of so much relief to a very excited hopefully new mercedez owner.

Lots of good MB indies who could give it the once over. AA and RAC would be a good bet for an inspection too.
These engines are pretty bullet proof but leaks are always a concern, as is a patchy service history.
At the very least it will need a lot of work done. Full oil change, all filters and gearbox oil service, diff oil change and probably seals etc. All this should have been done so if it hasn't been, that work should be reflected in the price.

Given the fact that a lot of this work may not have been done and that may have caused problems I'd recommend an inspection at the very least and possibly just walk away.

Thank you very much indeed. I will see if the seller will come done enough to warrant the work needed as do like the car v much but I think the inevitable is that I will need to walk away. Are we talking around £1500 min for the work to be done.

The oil leak can be from a numbert of places. It may even be from the air in take where there are o rings.
How bad is the oil leak?
Mine has done 175k and still going strong!
