Gearbox oil level always remains low with some minor slipping. It is not leaking to the exterior as far as I can see. If the gearbox is filled to proper level and using a multilevel carpark, a minute or so after leaving, smoke comes out of the exhaust. Is there a connection between the gearbox and engine that might allow this to happen and what is going wrong?

There is a vacuum pipe connected to the modulator on the side of the gearbox and then to the inlet manifold. It is there to provide varying vacuum depending on engine load thus softer gear engagement on light load.

Oil is being sucked up the pipe and burnt. You need a new modulator diapragm.

Cheers Dieselman and Andy. Could you tell me more and is it something I could change myself? If not, I have the services of a good mechanic and could order the part for him to fit.

Incidentally, the smoke emitted produces quite an effect for a few miles
