I own a 300CE 24v Convertible with automatic 5 gearbox. According to some it has a half electronical gearbox (I have no idea). When driving it won´t go from the 4th to the 5th gear. Can someone tell me what can be done to fix it. Thanks
Sorry for the late reply. I understand that the 5th gear is an overdive gear to aid economy. It will not be engaged unless the car is travelling at least 60 mph. This is where the electronics bit probably comes in.
I have a '94 320E 5 speed and mine changes into 5th at any speed above about 30mph. It is not restricted to only over 60.
I assume that when you go into drive you aren't pushing the lever to the left which will limit the car to the first 4 gears? I am sure you know this anyway sorry if this is a dumb suggestion.
How are the rest of the changes, is the gearbox OK apart from not changing into 5th?
One way to test it is: Drive along as normal in 'D' at about 60. Slip the lever over to '4' whilst watching the rev counter.
Depending on driving conditions (uphill or downhill), load, and position of your right foot, engine torque, when it would go to 5th. But should be in 5th by 40 on a flat road driving gently
