My 1989 petrol 300e auto box whines (like a distant foghorn) after manouvering, in traffic or coming off motorway until I reach normal road speed. It also slips (engine revs rise for a split second) between 2nd and 3rd sometimes but not always.
Could anyone advise whether it sounds terminal (like a recon box is needed) or whether it may be a vacuum diaphragm / torque converter problem. I don't really know if the whine and slipping is related
Thanks for any advice.

Take it to an automatic specialist and tell them you want a full service (filters, oil ect) done on your box! Itll do wonders!!

Hi John

The clutch packs K2 are starting to wear out. Changing the box oil its doubtfull it will make much of a difference as it should slip in all gears.

I am not a man who favours the "recon boxes" as they are never put together properly. We tend to recon your box using the MB parts and resetting all release tolerences.

Either way the clutch packs will certainly be starting to wear out, only a matter of time. The good thing is that it won't break down on you without giving you loads of warning.

Thanks for all your advice guys.
Mine is the non-electronic box with 'E'conomy and 'S'tandard switch.
It's done 165000 miles so I suppose I shouldnt grumble too much
Sounds like I'll need to sell kids to fund a box overhaul!

Regards
John

Hi

first stage would would be to check oil level assuming this is Ok you need the modulating pressure and operating pressure checking the local stealer should be able to do this for little money and they should give diag. The box you have is the 722.4 which is an exelent box and responds well to recon's
good luck

Not an expensive box to fix
