Hi guys I have a 1991 300se, w126. It produces a black smoke after filling petrol. My mechanic has changed a fuel distributor. Sometimes the smoke is NOT visible but i can feel it in my eyes when the windows are open. Sometimes the engine goes off when i am driving. It takes a bit long to change gears. it also jumps when it changes gear. It can still run. What could be the problem?

Temperature control sensor? I changed the thermos-start. The car does not seem to overheat as the gauge is way below 120, somewhere between 40 and 80. Where exactly is it located

The temp sensor for the ECU is on the right hand side rear of the engine. It has two plugs tht are known to break and can be bought cheaply from MB.

Was it alright before the fuel distributor work, or at least better than since it was changed? If so, go back to your mechanic.

W126 Fuel Gauge Not working

Hi guys. I have a 1991 300se Mercedes. I have just replaced the fuel sender (new and genuine) at the back of my rear seat. The gauge stick on the dashboard keeps jumping up and down, one moment it says the car is half tank, then empty, then full. But if the fuel is low an orange light comes on. What can i do to make it accurate?

Are you reading any of the replies to your questions?

I guess the car is running ok now?

Petrol smell, how can you be sure it doesnt leak? This can be dangerous, check the EHA on the fuel distributor, a little black box that can weep. A weak seal on the fuel cap can cause petrol smell, use new MB cap only if replacing. Your tank could even be ruptured a little, I would check it from the boot area by removing the carpeted panel.

Fuel gauge, have you had the instruments out at all? Sounds like the gauge may have been shorted and you may need to replace it. Or a bad earth somewhere.

Your cruise control will most likely be the amplifier, it is usually a silver rectangular box underneath the steering wheel area, and the soldered contacts inside often become compromised and need redoing. A good known replacement is another alternative.

thanks Ian

Thank you so much Ian, ill definitely check that. I'll change the fuel cap because sometimes it refuses to come out when i try to fill gas. I always have to use a pair of pliers to remove it. The tank i am certai it doesn't leak, if it petrol would always smell. It only smells when i driving, especially when i press the accelerator very hard. What exactly do i have to check with the EHA, coz my mechanic is always adjusting the fuel distributor with an LN key. Will deal with the cruise control later.

If you mean that your petrol cap is vacuumed on, I'm afraid your vent valve is faulty, and/or the lines that connect to that and run up to the charcoal canister.

This happened to me and the strong fuel pumps caused the tank to rupture. It shrank by about 30 litres before I noticed and a tiny trickle of petrol was leaking out of the back surface of it. That made a smell of fuel in the car.

I would unplug the valve right away. It's a plastic valve and it is connected in the line above the rear axle area.

No power from 0 to 60km/hr

Hi guys its me again. My 1991 300se, w126 accelerates slowly from 0 to 60 km/hr with the sound p-p-p-p from the exhaust, then runs like nobody's business from 60 km/h upwards. We have replaced a fuel distributor, 2 fuel pumps, rotor, battery, spark plugs and a coil (also serviced). We then checked where the plugs are inserted. With the engine running we removed spark plug coverings one by one. On the last three the engine threatens to go off when we remove the covering but on the first 3 the engine just runs without a change. But there is an electricity sound coming from the first 3. Again if we rev the car it says p-p-p-p when the rev counter is below 2, but revs nicely with a roar after 2. What do we need to do?

Just to check, did you also replace the electrical distributor cap? They are known to go through these quite quickly.

Adjusting fuel Mixture 300se 1991 model

Hi guys. I messed up my fuel mixture settings now the car is acting up. I was using an LN key, the car won't run, and it smokes. I am now thinking about taking it for CO2 analysis. Can that Help? What are the default factory readings that measure the correct mixture. My kicked down cable is messed up as well. Any formula for adjusting that as well? Does the kickdown adjustment affect the readings?

(One more thing, just how do i create new posts in the forum, i am not sure if this will appear in the correct section?)
