Having just replaced the water pump garage has advised me the head gasket needs doing. Whilst I have no reason to doubt them is there anyway I can check. There does appear to be quite a bit of oil at the rear of the engine and they have said there was evidence of oil in the goolant when they did the water pump. Is circa £900 a reasonable price?

It is doubtful that the oil at the rear of engine has come from head gaskit, it usually comes from rocker cover, always hard to tell as the fan blows it to the back. Oil in the coolant, its normally the other way round. keep an eye on the water, oil shows up as sludge, water in the oil can make sludge , but can always be seen in the oil filler cap as water bubbles. I am sure that your car has a separate oil cooler to the rad, so should not be that.
Re price I reckon I could do the job in one day, just.
