300SL Cutting out and non starter

I have a lovely 300SL which for the last few weeks has been playing up.
Basically it runs lumpy and cuts out unpredictably.

We initially thought that it was a fuel problem, as I put a gallon in and eventually it started however this cut out has happened with a 3/4 of a tank.

Any help would be appreciated
