Hi,
Just serviced my 92 300TE 4Matic at 114000miles and had a bit of a worrying moment with the oil filter, I had been given a much smaller filter by the dealer and had just started the service by doing a quick visual on the replacement parts against the parts still on the car and thought "hold on this new filter is half the size of the old one I'm about to take off". I returned to the Dealer in Chateauroux who informed me that Mercedes have now made this filter smaller and there is no problem with it so I am to go ahead and fit it to the car. All the other bits he sold me were spot on but we live miles out in the countryside and this is our only car so I am being a bit over cautious here.

My question is will this smaller filter be up to the job and should I go ahead and fit it?

cheers

i would drive back to the dealers and double check, show them your concerns and it may well be that they have given you an incorrect filter. make sure you give them youtr reg or even better vin

on the other hand you may have an aftermarket filter on the car from the previous oil change which is of different dimensions.

theres no harm in double or threble checking

I got mine from a Bosch motor factor

and had the same quandary. We compared part numbers and chasis numbers and all that and came to the conclusion the part was correctly listed and packaged. I fitted ut, and no probs yet at 2000miles since the cahnge. I went and bougt one at GSF, and it was bigger, but not much.

Fitted the filter, renewed the drain plug & copper washer & changed the oil all 6 1/2 ltrs of the finest mobil 1 today with no problems to report. thanks for the filter tool advice, I've always used a 3 legged multifit oil filter wrench to remove & fit filters - probably one step up from a screwdriver punched through it but having used a "professional" filter removal tool from a well known and expensive tool supplier in a big white van which got stuck on twice I find the simplest tools are often the best .. especially for the F'T' torque setting hamfisted home mechanics like myself.

I badgered MB

into selling me one of their official oil filter tools. It fits the canister type housing on our C280 and the cartridge type on the 300TE. They only charged me a tenner for it, although I did have to use about a fiver's worth of politeness and logic to get it.

I have found that these tools are not that usefull and im not that strong but if you put boath hands on and twist slowly with a slight rocking motion they come off with little. Changed hundreds and this has never failed.
