The offside bracket rusted of so I took the rear box of and welded it back on. Rear box looks well grotty round the end welds so I think I need to replace it. Do I buy one from Merc or fit a bosal one or should I go for stainless. I like stainless but I know I will not have this car as long as the 940tdi (12 years) and exhaust never touched and still going strong. Any bright ideas out there. AA

I would go for the OE quality if your keeping the car longer than 3 years. I must admit the 124 and 210 estate rear boxes do tend to corrode around the seams quite badly. I generally clean the muck off every year and apply a coat of silver hammerite to the seams if they are showing

I fitted a full SS system to my 124 and it did change the characteristics of the car re sound (noisier) and performance (a bit flatter for a few thousand miles until a bit of back pressure from soot built up).
