320 CLK Power Loss above 4000rpm

Is there anyone out there who can help?

The car is giving me grief above 4000rpm. If I floor it the car pulls to 4000rpm no problem, but above that it doesn't pull so well. It will splutter a little and then kick in. If I put the car in "park" and rev it up it's Ok to 4000rpm and then seems to splutter a bit.

When not in gear (P or N), the engine revs (on this 6-cyl, 320 engine) are purposely limited to 4000 rpm so as not to damage the gearbox.

If you still hit this limit when driving in gear, you may have a fault/bug with the ECU. Perhaps it's not sensing that the car is in gear, but since this is all done through a CAN-bus network between engine and gearbox (and brakes) it will require the proper diagnostic tools. It's no longer like the old-days with limit switches and mechanical linkages. Digital information now moves around between the controllers in each unit at 500Mbits/sec.

Perhaps just a reprogramming of the ECU will do it, but best to have the system checked and fault-codes, if any, read, in case some sensor or other component is faulty. Not really a DIY job unless you have the diagnostic tools.

Finally, it was suggested in another recent post that the W/S switch on the gearbox, when in "W" mode, also limits engine revs (apart from making the gearbox start in second gear). Try to see what gear the car starts-off in. Possibly you just have a faulty W/S switch. (??)

Could be the O2 sensor on the exhaust system, I had a similar problem and thats what cured it approx. £200
