Hi Folks.
I have a 170 series 320 slk manual, It seems to have a rattling baffles in the exhaust. Can anybody tell me aprox how much a new system might be.???
Im hoping its just the centre section, as thats where the noise seems to be coming from, Although its always prudent to replace the lot,, ...

Ive heard that the cats can be troublesome, Is that correct.. How do they fail.??

It will be the cats for one off the banks of cylinders, will be very expensive unfortunatly, poss £500- 600 pounds for the part alone.

It would get it done as the particles form the broken cat can get sucked back up into the engine on over run and cause engine wear or failure.

The honey cone contents of the cat break off the outer casing and rattle around and break up in the exhaust.

I've just encountered the 'collapsing cat' syndrome on our slk320 auto, and have been quoted £870 by my local Kwik-fit to replace the 'three-way' centre section. Can anyone advise if that's;
1. A reasonable price.
2.Is the rest of the system likely to survive/welcome the introduction of a new member of the family?
3.How shall I inform the family chancellor about this impending budgetary crisis?!
Any and all thoughts would be most welcome.

why not ask mercedes for a price to do the job, I think I would prefer to spend a little more and have mercedes do it rather than kik it.

1) Sounds alot for a non OEM part. I'd get MB to do it.
2) Should be ok but MB can advise further. May be cost effective labour-wise to get the lot done in one go.
3) No idea, but good luck and if you survive intact please post your method as I'm sure the rest of us would like to know;)

As per above there are many many threads on this forum where members have regretted putting aftermarket exhausts & cats on. Mostly down to the sound of the new system as well as the longevity (or lack of)

Decided to do an update.
Buypartsby supplied the replacement cat for £168.52 and a fitting kit for £8.75 plus vat. My local 'chaps' fitted for £104 plus vat on 21/10/08.
Two winters (almost) gone and so far so good!!
