Hi Folks.
Im hoping somebody with knowledge of these cars can help me out.?

I own a 2001 320 SLK with a manual box.
The car has approx 32000 miles + has a full MB history.

GREAT car.... BUT im finding it more + more difficult to engage 1st or reverse gears .

++++ This ONLY happens from cold. ++++

It ok when the cars got warmed up, but a real pain first thing in the AM....Is this "normal" or is something "going amiss" + poss needs adjusting.
Im a competant home mechanic , having virtually rebuilt a Porsche 968 recently....
Im asking on hear as i dont particularly want to traipse down to my local dealership to be treated like some sort of "brown muck on someones shoe".....

Hope somebody can help .???

When I joined this forum I made a huge mistake on gearboxes, yours was the answer I put up but it does apply to you.

The mod is to take some oil out of the gear box,. If you ask your MB dealer they can tell you how much to take out. its a standard mod. If they will not tell you, come back and I look it up.

Television's right. It's hard to believe but the removal of 300ml makes a big difference to the baulking when selecting first or reverse and also help sthe change from first to second. I had the same problem on my SLK320 and complained for a few months before the dealer found a technical bulletin describing the poblem and cure. Basically they put the drain hole too high, so you need to fill it and then syphon out 30cl. While you're at it I suggest you change the oil and put synthetic in (Redline MTL is the correct oil and is MB approved) - you'll find loads of iron filings around the drain plug. It'll make the gear change smoother and synthetic oil works better than standard oil at low temperatures.

Hi Pano, I Hate it too, if I remember who it is I do not try again, one guy was very rude and I stopped answering his threads and he sent me an Email demanding an answer. What part of Somerset are you.

26 miles away in Lyme Regis. You have a nice shopping center there, and my friends and I have just started using it, the only snag for me is that I am not a very good consumer, in fact I buy nothing other than food. I do not want to discuss my spending on MB's.

Yes coco, please post the results. This not only helps existing members, but also new members. Hopefully Malcoms ideas in the DIY side will help preserve these answers for future members. :)
