It's commonly written that an air conditioning system needs recharging approx every 3 years. A couple of questions -
1) Do you only need a recharge if your air con starts to be noticeable in that it's not chilling the air, rather than waiting the 3 years?
2) Anyone recommend a company who can do this?
3) What's the rought cost?

Thanks,

A170 CDI with air con!

Air con systems need recharging when they don't get as cold as they used to
there is no fixed time for this. the main thing is to run it even in winter to keep the seals in good order, just run for 5 mins, once or twice a month with the temp turned down to activate it.

as to who is good, it depends on where you live

as to cost its £55-£60 that includes drying. takes on average 1 hour, while you wait

Well I never heard of anybody recharging a fridge/freezer.

Anyhow, I've never recharged any of the aircon'd cars I've had. Regular use and good maintainance sees to that.

They do run lower over time, even without a leak. To maintain it, I never turn mine off. I did notice the aircon on my last W210 was not as good as when I first got it. It still worked perfectly well, but on very hot days, it was struggling a bit. I suspect it would have benefitted from a recharge though I never had it done. Sure, they will continue to work perfectly well and if you've never used it new, you'll never miss what you never had and all that.
A fridge is a simple sealed static system whereas a car aircon is more complex with more joints to leak from, but you can get fridges recharged too!

No open parts on a fridge, totally encapsalated motor, As Maddog says home and commercial units do get recharged, many of these guys mess up car's as the proccess is not the same. Don't use them
the main problem on a car is the compressor seals, one should really turn the temp down below the ambiant temp now and then to engage the clutch, ie rapid demist.

It's quite common - I've had to have the air con recharged on a couple of cars over the years.

Highly recommended.

COOL IT Vehicle Air Conditioning Specialists are outside Dorchester, Dorset, on 01305 889843 or 07968 727095 and are absolutely outstanding. (I have no other interest than as a more than satisfied customer.)

I use airconco in Manchester (owned by Eric stott). They have a website. They recommend a 2-yearly service where they dry and refill the aircon and add lubrication.Apparently the gas naturally leaks out over a period of time so it does need refilling after a period of time.Airconco in Heywood are fantastic.

Anybody know of a good air-con outfit they can recommend in the Leicester area. Would be good for future ref.

IMO not worth it. Destroyed the a/c on my 93 W124 use using a man in a van set up.

The a/c on the 98 C was struggling a lot when I last had the car serviced at the stealership - £ 100 for an 'overhall' and regassing. The car came back smelling very fresh and the a/c was very cold.
