The engine of my '94 410D van has recently started making a strange noise, like air escaping under pressure, in strict time with the rotation of the engine. I've traced it, I think, to a small opening in the cylinder head just in front of injector no.1 from which air and hot oil are being expelled with a loud puff every time the engine turns. It's hard to see, but I can feel it very distinctly with my hand. I could try and get a picture if it would help...
I've no idea what that opening is for - is it some kind of oil breather? Also, can anyone suggest why this noise might have appeared so suddenly, when the opening, presumably, has always been there? Unless some seal or other may have blown?
I'm at a complete loss with this, never saw a hole such as this one in any other cylinder head.
Any and all help gratefully received, cheers.
