410D - Surging at low-mid rpm

Hi,

I have a Hymer motorhome on a 1990 Merc 410D base, I have had this vehicle for around 5 years now and it has always had this problem of surging at low to medium rpm, mostly light load, I can drive around the problem but I would like to fix it, any ideas anybody ?

I would also like to turbo charge it but don't want to spend £2500 at T&B, if anyone has any info for a DIY job I would much appreciate it.

This would be a huge job, requiring new manifolds, cooling, etc,. An engine transplant could well be an easier job, although I'm not sure how much power you need in a motorhome? lso, aftermarket turbos are not famed for reliability.

Hi Simon, just need to get up hills a little quicker so more mid range torque rather than peak power. Would consider fitting a Sprinter engine but the intake manifolding is different, not to mention fly by wire etc.
Was wondering about using exhaust manifold & turbo from Sprinter but not sure where that leaves me with the Diesel pump....

There was someone considering this on here last year and came to the conclusion that it was impractical because of the cost and complexity. I would expect that there are many problems to contend with.
