My 1985 500SEC just began downshifting itself mostly into 2nd and essentialy staying there; it will start out on a trip by mostly upshifting normally and then begin self downshifting and holding. The fluid is full and sweet, the miles are 163k. The shift lever also began resisting going back up into reverse and park, yet after applying WD40 down the shaft that seems to have very much loosened up that problem. Reverse gear seems to work fine. Any thoughts or experiences?
Also, it has developed a very noticeable can rattling sound in the rear that has been diagnosed to be some sort of ring part behind the rear wheels themselves that hold and support the brake calipers. This part is slightly loose when manipulated after raising the rear, so the calipers themselves can shake and rattle when hitting bumps. When the brakes are applied, however, the rattle can be eliminated or controlled depending on how hard they're applied, apparently stabalizing them. Any idea what this part is and how to deal with it?
Thank you!
