Can you help a friend in Dubai?

******

I own a 1986 Mercedes 500 SL. (convertible) I love
the car, white w/ burgady soft top and interior/ w/
tortoise trimming inside- and its just been serviced,
and bad news.

The timing engine chain is about to go at anytime,
(the grooves that hold the cahin are broken) and there
are oil leaks under engine and so forth. To fix these
problems here, it costs more than $ 12,000. here in
UAE, and they do not recommend doing this type of job
here, anyway.

I've been advised to sell the car quick - to anyone
bfore the chain breaks, and engine is totaled.

Is it worth trying to keep this car, and ship it to
Europe to leave with a friend, and search for a new,
used engine for it, and find a european ''tinker'' who
is good with old cars? The vehicle is European specs,
it came here from Germany, and is obviously left
drive, so I assume it could not be sent to UK, or
could it?

When is this model considered a ''classic."'

if I sell here, i will get nothing for it, as they do
not value old cars here, and if i continue to drive
it, now know i am on borrowed time, and once the chain
busts, it is finished.

any suggestions? The interior and body work in are in
excellent shape, and all else looks good.

I hate to give it up; what should i do with it?

A few options occur to me:

1. Buy a complete replacement engine and ship it out there.

2. Buy gaskets sets, timing chain (or is it a belt on this car), and the
appropriate pulleys and offer someone an expenses paid trip out there for a
week to do the work.

3. Or, as she suggests, bring it here and work on it or sell it.

Any help would be gratefully received

Option 2 looks good to me - I just wish I were competent! (I like Dubai!!!!).

I hope you get a nibble from an expert here ( I expect they would prefer to bring the bits with them too).

Its not a major job to change a cam chain. The gaskets could be depending on which ones are leaking and the severity of the leak.

$12,000 to do the job? Is that US$ or what? Even a complete strip and rebuild wont cost nearly that amount. I would shop about for a second opinion locally before looking at the more drastic alternatives.
