Hi, thanks to anyone who might be able to help. I just bought an 89 560 SEL. It will not start. When I turn the key all I can hear is a motorized sound of the engine trying to turn over... but it almost sounds like there's no spark.

Does anyone have experience with this?

I'd love to know if it's fuel delivery or if the engine might not be getting spark. All I hear is what sounds like someone plugged in an electric motor that is going slowly round and round. I know, as many of us do, what the sound of an engine getting spark but no fuel sounds like. This sounds like that. Just a simple "rrr rrrr rrrr rrrr". The battery is good.

thanks again!

OK, I have the fuel pump working. The relay is OK, there's spark and the car SOUNDS like it wants to start. MUCH better life than before. But it's not starting. The chances that the fuel pump wasn't working (it wasn't), AND something else is wrong all of a sudden are very slim.

Do I have to prime the engine in some way to get it to start? It seems like it wants to start, I pumped the gas pedal (because there probably wasn't much fuel near the engine since the fuel pump wasn't operational for months). I'm thinking I need some starter fluid or something. What do you think?

I just got my 83 500SL and was parked for 2 years....

First...I put some gas nuteralizer and new gas in the tank...

Second...I took the cover off of the intake and sprayed engine cleaner
down the intake.... about a good shot glass worth..

I let it sit while I unscrewed the 2 gas lines from the intake..

i turned on just the ignition to see if i had gas coming from the pump through the lines and to take a bit of gas from the lines to get to the new gas...

If it smells sweet and yet stale......

It is bad gas and let about 2 or 3 cups drain into 3 different cups...

Smell he 1 2nd and then 3rd...

The bad gas is definently noticably weak smelling

If no gas coming through the line.......thats a problem.....

All was good so I hooked back up.....

Mine still did not start.....

Smelled gas so I knew it was no spark.....

I pulled the wire from the coil and had someone try to start as i held the wires metal tip 1/2 inch away from the tip of the coil....

No spark........

I cleaned and scuffed the wire tip and the coil tip.

tried it again and WALLAH!!!

It started with me holding the wire 1/2 inch away from the coil.....

And we were on our way!!!!!!!!!!!
