Yesterday evening I started my 07 S320L cdi and using the steering mounted coulm stalk attempted to put it into gear. Nothing happened so I tried to select either "D" or "R" but the car and the indicating light on the dash remained firmly stuck in "P". I switched the car off, left it for a few seconds and tried again. Car was still stuck in park but a red message popped up saying "Drive car to workshop without changing gear". The message only stayed for a few seconds and then disapeared. So I turned the car off, left it for a minute and started it again. This time no problems, everything worked as normal. Has anyone else had or heard of this problem? What should I do now? My dealer says he has never heard of this before.

not a lot of these about yet. I'd have the dealer read the fault codes. Given that an error popped up on the dash I'd expect something to have been logged.

Seeing the address is Ireland I would recommend keeping a log of any events like this and also letting the dealer know about it. I would do it in writing. I did not find MB Ireland in anyway helpful with these things and cant imagine anything has changed despite what we are being told.

The brake light switch can cause the lever to lock up, but your car is rather new
On these complicated cars, little glitches do happen, make a note of it, but it may not do it again

Thaks Guys, I do keep a pocket diary in all my cars and record every little blip or drop of oil used. This practice served me very well some years ago when I had to take Opel (vauxhall) all the way to the high court over a very unreliable and oil thirsty Zafira. After two years I got the full replacement cost of the car plus expenses and they paid all the costs. I will never understand why the local dealer didnt take the car back and give me a new one. I was even prepared to give him some more money against it.
Thanks for the info on the gearbox. as usual you guys know more than the dealers!
