In case anyone in the South West / West Midlands finds the suggested service locations are a bit out of area, I can highly recommend Doug Pretty at Autotrans, Gloucester. I've had Jaguars and Mercs gearboxes serviced here (including conductor plate changes on the Mercs / gearbox oil and filter changes etc) and the prices were very good, and this guy knows his stuff. http://www.autotransgloucester.co.uk/

just the fluid , filter and gasket are 100 quid and that's at trade so I think 450 or less is a great price pal

and WOW!!! What a difference that has made. So plate/connector plug/fluid etc changed and its like a different car. Now to get some miles on it

You have a few more options (Used TCU, repair speed sensors etc, depending on failure mode), but using new MB parts, its £800-950.

My mechanic did flap to start with as he thought mine was the 7g tronic. It would have cost way more than the 722.6 box... thank god for having a 5 speed

Yes. Note, some 722.9s cannot have the VGS unit bought from MB on its own, and is only supplied with a valve body, the price above is if it is available separately.
