Hi guys,

I own a 96 e320 here in hawaii and this noise happens everytime on a cold start.
Has been now for the past 2 months. It's a loud high pitch whirring/squeal (like a mini siren) and after 45 secs it goes away. For example, in our community we have the siren that lets us know if theres some kind of warning (war or disaster), the noise comes on, whines, and then when it shuts down it dies down like the siren does (i hope that was a good analogy haha). It usually comes back again for maybe 5 seconds once the car goes back to idle (like if i start it and take off, at the next traffic light itll come back on for less then 5 secs). The noise will not come back at any other time unless the car sits for hours before the next start.

I know it's not a drive belt. I'd think its some kind of pulley or bearing but the type of sound it is and then cycles off within a minute doesn't seem right. I've given up and now see if someone else has dealt with this issue before. I best guess is some kind of vaccum or ac noise. All components on car works fine and nothing changes the pitch or length of the sound while doing anything (turning ac on, driving, etc)

Thank you for your time.

Hi
Take the drivebelt off at night.
Turn the engine over in the morning.
If its gone, then it is one of the items driven by the drivebelt.

It's the air injection pump. It's used to reduce emissions on startup. I think you can safely ignore the noise

To Bolide re: air injection pump

I notice that you said to ignore the noise - an earlier posting on this site described how one guy did just that and loads of other things went into meltdown when the pump failed. Like, the drive belt, and just about anything connected to it. The noise on a cold start was so loud on my E280 when I got it :) that I searched the forums for a reason. My independent specialist says the noise (rather like concorde taking off) on my E280 is the injection pump failing and the initial suggestion was to let the car run without moving off for the couple of minutes the roar persists for, then when the car quietens down to drive off as required...HOWEVER...the noise has become increasingly desperate - like a dying pump might do... and having priced up a new one we both agreed that he might try to bypass it as I don't have an offshore account to fund the replacement. I was wondering how something that's obviously so inconsequential that you can just bypass it should cost nearly £1000 to replace??!! ....and whether ignoring it would be a wise thing for someone to be advised to do??

glen,

Sure sounds like a slipping belt to me......but if it turns out to be the air pump, you can safely throw it away (unless your green concience forbids it !) because it doesn't do much.

You'll need a shorter belt, but they are made in hundreds of lengths, so no problem...

There will be much more room under the bonnet as a consequence of removoing it, so less things to catch your fingers in.....
