Hi,

getting slipping between 1st and 2nd (and between other gears occasionally).

Service centre says "new box - £1800+".

Any hope it could be something else?

Not expecting diagnosis from a keyboard - just curious as to what else it might/could be.

Many thanks!

63k.

Sometimes changes down when it shouldn't as well - but the problem isn't constant ie drives ok some of the time.

Was very seldom a year ago (ie only between 1/2 at high revs) but more frequent and abrupt of late.

Thanks for the assistance.

Is it auto or manual? I recently had a problem with an auto box. It turned out to be the servo selector. Quite expensive but half as much as 1800 quid.

Auto.

What I really want is a second opinion from someone not looking for a big job with the accompanying big bill!

And youll get just that, im in china so I gain nothing be giving you an honest opinion. Firstly the clutches on K1 are slipping and secondly the valve body is failing, therefore im sorry to say the claim is correct. But a good indie can rebuild your transmission for a lot less money.;)

As Eric says, there are plenty of auto box specialists that will recon your box for less than £1800 IMO. Sure a new one would be nice, but a major extravagance on a 10 year old car.
Ring round a few and see what they say.

theres also something else you might want to have a look at. There should be some wiring near the gearbox, and a control unit/ECU, one thing to look out for on the W140 auto is water and dirt affecting the wiring and ecu, the wiring can become brittle and short out. Shame really I had a gearbox last year that was perfect, ended up giving it away for £50.

Just had my box rebuilt for £550 by Merc Care in Pudsey - Leeds.
He told me that on the later models with the electronic box (sealed for life) it would have been around £850.

It was slipping uphill between 2-3, sweet as a nut now, plus great service, lots of heads up phone calls from the mechanic

That was a good price for that work,it makes a huge difference when you are used to working on something.
