 I have recently bought a 1998 c180 with 72,000 on clock. Car is mint but about a week ago the gearbox went into safe mode and wouldnt come out of second gear. I had been towing a small trailer at the time. I took it to my garage where my mate put it on his computer, it told us only that the ACS system is the fault. But he didnt know too much about it. I know that ACS is the automatic clutch system, has anyone any ideas as to how or what the problem may be? apart from being in safe mode everything else seems fine, as there is no funny noises or nothing strange happened before it went.

Anyt input would be highly appreciated.

Cheers:confuse

hi everyone, im new here. I just like to find a possible solution for my 1998 c180 merc. I bought the car as non starting. previous owner told me that it is starter motor fault and has no battery, so no way of testing it. Few days after having it in my driveway, i put a battery and found out it was not starter motor as it was cranking alright but rather found out when i open the head cover, chain was actually snapped. I changed the engine by fitting another. I enjoyed driving it only for 3 days and in the morning of the fourth day as we left on our way for the church, suddenly the car went like as if in neutral. it won't go forward or reverse.. I went to some forum some suggest, clogged filter. So, I changed the fluid and the filter using the Halfords fluid as recommended equivalent from their chart, but still its futile. :( Now, I'm frustrated as the car still won't move. When I step on the accelerator and rev up, it only rev to a certain degree and it seems that something is holding the engine back and not allowing me to rev to its potential power, not like during the first three days. Can somebody please suggest any idea to help me sort what this problem is all about?:? I appreciate whatever help there is. Thank you in advance.

I thjnk there is a rev limiter that kicks in if you try to rev whilst the car is effectively in neutral. As regards fixing the box, others will probably be along to advise. I would be very careful about using Halfords charts etc. Your autobox will be model 722.6 and there is a specific Mercedes only fluid for it, obtainable from Mercedes only I understand. Good luck.

The engine should rev up to 4k in P or N

Hello Guys, thank you for the replies. My worries are actually the gearbox that is not really reponding to whatever gears selected.. I was driving along for about 2 minutes from my house and suddenly the car went like neutral mode. so I stopped, put it back to PARK and then shifted back to DRIVE but unfortunately the car won't go forward at all. I tried to put it to Reverse and still the same doesn't do anything. After the church we towed it back to my driveway. the following day as I still wonder, I tried to rev it and noticed that it no longer rev up to the potential power. But I have replaced the filter and the fluid (although I must admit that I should have not used or rely in Halfords Reference Chart).

If I drain the Halford fluid and put another fluid from Merc service centres, I wonder if it will actually sort the problem? Or is there any way for me to save from spending more other than replacing a genuine auto fluid from Merc? Or is there anyway that i have missed that I should do in order to make it back to functional state?

I'm just desperate to make it work as I have spent a bit a lot already to replace the engine and put it back on the road with MOT and Road Tax and end up not using it.

I hope there are some advices on how to fix this gearbox as it was driving alright and suddenly it went as if neutral.

I need Help Please. Thank you
