I have recently purchased a 98 E300td avant-garde with full service history, nice and clean and seems mechanically sound. However after driving back from Birmingham to Norfolk, the first fault was the BAS, ASR light coming with the ABS as well the brakes worked fine. |I stopped the car turned off the ignition and the warning lights went away. The same fault came back some 50 miles down the road and I just kept going. Then I started putting my foot down and when the car got over 3500 in 3rd I took my foot of the accelerator and it just kept accelerating, this happens in 4th and 5th and I have to brake against the engine to get the revs under the 3000, when the car responds normally. The last fault is the ASR warning symbol light coming on whilst travelling on a straight dry road slowing the car down to 10 mph this fault has happened twice. It all points to the ECU as the car runs great when these errors are not present. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
The Brake light switch at £9 will solve all of the BAS problems and possible the ESP ,(to reset ESP, turn the steering from lock to lock 3 times)

The other fault is fly by wire related

The accelerator cable terminates near the brake fluid reservoir, on a throttle potentiometer. Lift the bonnet, look near the steering wheel - you'll see it in the corner.

Thats the first place I'd look. Check to see that the cable isn't snagging anywhere, and that the sprung mechanism near that throttle pot is nicely lubricated (and check that the spring hasn't snapped).
